I don’t think about public science most days. But it’s there when I drink a glass of water, take my medicine or get a storm alert on my phone. Between 2024 and 2026, health and science agencies saw a 56% decrease in project grant funding. These agencies also lost more than 113,000 federal employees between September 2024 and August 2026, representing a 13.4% decrease. These changes mean fewer people testing our water, developing medicines, delivering safe food and monitoring storms. This work is easy to miss until it’s gone. Parents already have enough to worry about. Whether the lettuce in the fridge is safe shouldn’t be one of them. Federal food inspectors, outbreak trackers and scientists work behind the scenes so we don’t have to wonder. But federal employees working in food inspection decreased by 68.4% between September 2024 and August 2026. Cuts to research and contracts at public health and food agencies put families like mine and yours at risk. This is why I’m speaking up for the public servants who keep our food safe. When someone you love gets a scary diagnosis, all you should have to think about is helping them get better. You shouldn’t have to wonder if anyone is still researching their illness. According to the CDC, three in four American adults have at least one chronic condition. In fiscal year 2026, biomedical research agencies saw a decrease of more than 42% in research and development contract funding. These cuts stall research that could slow disease and lead to better treatments. Explore how government-led medical research is changing and why we should be worried at science.federalharmstracker.org. I’m speaking up for the research that gives families hope. Slow down. Reconnect with nature. Make memories with your family. Admire wildlife. Whatever your reason, our national parks are treasured places we all enjoy and share. Public lands are more than places to visit—they also support local businesses and jobs in the communities around them. But national park and public land agencies lost more than 20% of their combined federal workforces from September 2024 to August 2026. Fewer rangers, scientists and land managers mean fewer people caring for the places we love. Every meal we eat depends on government support in some way. Our government supports farmers, funds agricultural research that helps them grow food efficiently, and keeps our food supply strong and safe. But recent USDA cuts—like the $3 billion sustainable farming program that was canceled for family farms to be able to weather drought and other challenge—threaten their ability to grow food and feed the entire country. This is how public science serves America—ensuring we all have enough to eat. Will you support our farms by resharing this post? #ScienceServesAmerica ourpublicservice.org/public-science-serves-america

Floods. Wildfire smoke. Food outbreaks. When emergencies hit, we count on federal scientists and experts to warn us early and help us respond fast. But the federal workforce supporting emergency response and weather forecasting decreased by more than 17% from September 2024 to August 2026. Cutting back on the people and programs who protect our communities leads to slower warnings, weaker protections, and communities who are left to fill the gap on their own, potentially costing lives. This is how public science serves our communities. Our public servants' job is to keep our families and communities safe—let's let them. #ScienceServesAmerica ourpublicservice.org/public-science-serves-america
